The History

The Okanagan Landing holds a pivotal place in the history of transportation along Okanagan Lake dating back to the 1800’s.

The street itself, is named after Thomas Ellis, known historically as one of the first European settlers in the area. The Landing in Penticton signifies where Ellis originally set foot, marking the beginning of a new era.

During a time when roads were scarce, and the rugged terrain of the surrounding area posed significant challenges, Okanagan Landing emerged as a crucial node in the transportation network. Using ships such as the historical SS Sicamous, it served as the primary gateway for shipping yards that facilitated travel and trade from Vernon to Penticton and the intervening locales.

Today, Ellis Street stands as a testament to the pioneering spirit and the historical significance of transport in bridging distant communities and fostering growth. Alas, the name “Ellis Landing” was born.
